Permabit Primary De-Dupe for Linux
Next evolution of Albireo
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on April 1, 2011 at 3:08 pmPermabit Technology Corporation announced the next evolution of Albireo, providing mainstream access to data optimization technology.
Permabit Albireo Virtual Data Optimizer (VDO) introduces data deduplication and optional compression technology to standard Linux platforms. Albireo VDO was developed to allow Linux NAS OEMs the ability to offer the same real-time primary data deduplication, delivering performance and scalability, as large storage OEMs.
Linux-based NAS has grown from 6.5% market share based on revenue in 2006 to 17.9% market share based on revenue in 2009 according to Gartner, Inc., Market Share: Business Network-Attached Storage/Unified Storage, Worldwide, 2009, By Pushan Rinnen, March 23, 2010. With big storage companies broadly delivering primary storage deduplication in 2011, the pressure on value-oriented, open source Linux storage OEMs has increased. Albireo VDO allows Linux OEMs to easily incorporate deduplication technology and deliver competitive, cost efficient storage solutions for block, file and unified storage platforms without the need for a separate dedicated appliance.
With Albireo VDO, OEM customers leverage all of the capabilities of their Linux-based storage solutions by continuing to utilize existing Linux applications, file systems, virtualization features and data protection capabilities. Because Albireo VDO uses Permabit’s patented Albireo High Performance Data Optimization Software, it is able to avoid costs associated with today’s ‘Big Storage’ dedupe solutions which require massive additional system memory, expensive SSD-based index repositories and proprietary PCI Express cards to achieve even a fraction of Albireo scalability and performance.
"There are dozens of Linux based NAS vendors that are looking for ways to differentiate themselves from their competitors. If it is available, most of these vendors are frustrated with the sub-par capabilities of the deduplication that comes with the OS they integrate into their NAS. Building the Albireo VDO technology into their devices is an excellent way to differentiate themselves and deliver a truly usable deduplication solution. By offering a turn-key data optimization solution for the Linux platform, Permabit is taking primary storage deduplication to the masses," said George Crump, Founder, Storage Switzerland.
"Ever since our initial announcement of Albireo, the demand from our OEMs to implement data deduplication into their systems has been overwhelming. As the primary data optimization market has begun to mature, the Linux-based OEMs have realized that they need to implement this technology into their solutions as well, if they want to remain competitive in the storage market," said Tom Cook, President and Chief Executive Officer, Permabit.
