Nimble Storage Amassed 40 Customers

In the first four months of shipping CS-Series enterprise storage solution

Nimble Storage has amassed over 40 customers of its CS-Series enterprise storage solution in the first four months of shipping, tripling its aggressive revenue projections for the period.

In November, 2010, the company also garnered $16 million in an oversubscribed Series C round of funding.

By addressing storage challenges facing midsize enterprises, Nimble has ramped revenue faster than the most successful storage start-ups of the past decade. Nimble helps organizations overcome the costs and complexity of enterprise storage by providing an storage architecture that accelerates performance and reduces the cost of primary storage; easily incorporates backup as part of an overall storage strategy; and provides a simplified, cost-effective approach to disaster recovery.

Momentum
Nimble has seen rapid acceptance of its CS-Series converged storage and backup solution, with strong adoption in high tech, architecture, financial services, legal, healthcare, and state and local government. To meet demand, the company has doubled sales staffing in the first quarter of 2011 and increased overall headcount by 25 percent over end-of-2010 levels.

Nimble’s widespread adoption has been driven by positive customer response. "Our primary storage and backup processes were previously separate and siloed, and we lacked the systems necessary to make disaster recovery a reality," said Mike Brester, systems administrator for MulvannyG2, a Bellevue, Washington-based architecture firm.  "And the costs for maintaining separate storage appliances and regimens were out of control. Nimble gave us the first practical alternative, with a converged storage and backup solution that also made offsite replication for disaster recovery a routine process."

"Nimble Storage has the right idea at the right time," said Robin Harris, founder and senior analyst, StorageMojo. "The Nimble solution combines storage, backup, and disaster recovery into a single process, simplifying IT’s job. Combined with its CASL storage architecture, this positions Nimble to relieve a serious pain felt by IT administrators."

The company’s CASL architecture, incorporated in the CS-Series, allows organizations to reduce their capital expenditures for storage and backup by at least 60 percent, while eliminating the need for separate, disk-based backup.

Awards and Certifications

Nimble has achieved high recognition for its breakthrough approach to enterprise storage:

  • Product of the Year: The Nimble CS-Series was honored with a Product of the Year award by CRN. The nomination followed the CS-Series receiving a ‘highly recommended’ rating in an independent CRN lab review, in which it was dubbed ‘The Holy Grail’ of high-performance storage.
  • #1 Most Promising Storage Start-up: Nimble was named the top storage startup by StorageNewsletter.
  • Top 25 Hot Product: The Nimble CS-Series was named a top-25 hot product by Network World.
  • Top 25 Storage Superstar: Umesh Maheshwari, cofounder and CTO of Nimble, was named a top 25 storage superstar by CRN.
  • VMware certification: Nimble was certified as an Elite member of the VMware Technology Alliance Partner program, providing assurance to customers that its converged storage and backup solution will integrate with their VMware virtualized environments.

Nimble Uniquely Addresses Customer Challenges
Widespread adoption of the Nimble CS-Series highlights Nimble’s unique approach to solving some of the toughest challenges in enterprise data storage:

  • Cost and Complexity: By eliminating high-RPM drives and separate disk-based backup devices, Nimble Storage slashes infrastructure costs, energy consumption, and rack space requirements. Enterprises can save more than 60 percent off the cost of multiple-component solutions from existing storage vendors.
  • Backup Windows: Nimble’s high-density drives and 20x capacity optimization enable cost-effective retention of up to 90 days of backups on a single array. There is no need to move data to or from another backup device, so application-aware backups and restores can be performed in seconds-not the hours or days required by existing technologies.
  • Enterprise Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity: Inadequate disaster recovery solutions in the midsize enterprise put businesses at risk of data loss and downtime in the event of a disaster. Nimble’s DR solution is enabled by highly WAN-efficient replication to an offsite Nimble array, making it up to 20 times faster than typical SAN replication.

Disruptive Innovation
Nimble’s CS-Series is based on its Cache Accelerated Sequential Layout (CASLTM), which enables inline data compression, intelligent data optimization leveraging flash memory and high-capacity disk, instant de-duped backups, and WAN-efficient replication – all in a single device. CASL allows organizations to reduce their capital expenditures for storage and backup while eliminating the need for separate, disk-based backup. Pricing starts at under $3/GB (usable) for primary storage and $0.25/GB for backup storage.
