Some Buffalo TeraStations Experienced Drive Failure

When installing replacement HDD

Buffalo Technology EMEA has recently identified that some TeraStation customers who have experienced a drive failure, may also experience issues when installing a replacement drive.

To ensure the replacement drive installs correctly, users must first check that the firmware installed on the TeraStation is version 1.41 or later.  If the firmware is 1.30 – 1.40 (inclusive) then an upgrade to the firmware must be downloaded and installed before installing the new replacement drive.

Products Affected

  • TeraStation III: TS-XL/R5 series, TS-RXL/R5 series
  • TeraStation iSCSI: TS-IX series, TS-RIX series
  • TeraStation ES: TS-XEL/R5 series

TeraStations with firmware version 1.29 or before or version 1.41 or later are not affected.

Detail of Possible Issue
Upon rebuilding RAID 5 arrays after replacing a failed hard drive, a bug within firmware versions 1.30-1.40 may prevent the RAID rebuild programme from completing its task successfully and may cause a loss of data.

RAID modes such as RAID 6, RAID 1. RAID 0 and Normal Mode are not affected; this bug only affects RAID 5 arrays.
