WD Also Reacts to Tom Coughlin
"We never manufactured 5-disk 3TB HDDs."
By Jean Jacques Maleval | December 7, 2010 at 3:15 pmFollowing the article from Tom Coughlin, We May See 4TB or Larger External HDDs by 2011, we received the following email from Daniel Mauerhofer, Head of Public Relations, EMEA & India, WD:
"Tom Coughlin is making erroneous statements: ‘Seagate Technology and Western Digital introduced external HDDs with 3 TB storage capacity earlier this year. These 3 TB external HDDs had 5 disks and so were thicker than HDDs for desktop computers.’
"This statement is wrong: WD never manufactured a 5-disk (10 heads) 3TB HDD; we are using 4-platter technology in internal and external drives.
‘Seagate Technology introduced a 3 TB external HDD during the Summer of 2010. Western Digital followed with their own external 3 TB HDD in early October 2010. In both cases the 3.5-inch disk drives used had 5 rather than 4 disks and so were too thick for most internal computer applications.’
"This is wrong for the above reasons too.
"StorageNewsletter reported on October 19 2010: WD Shipping 3TB 3.5-Inch SATA Caviar Green ($239), internal unit with four platters breaks 2.19TB barrier.
"We are mildly surprised that the Tom Coughlin article still hasn’t been corrected and we fully agree with Nigel Edwards from HGST.
And the brand goes on …"
