Dave McKendrick Comments on WD in Brazil

Eleven companies produce HDDs in the country in 1980s and early 1990s.

Here is the a comment of Professor David McKendrick, School of Management, Marketing and International Business, The Australian National University, who did a lot of works on the history of disk drive manufacturing, following our article WD to Manufacture HDDs in Brazil:

"The Brazilians were actually pretty active, with 11 companies producing drives at various times in the 1980s and early 1990s. Outside the US and Japan, no other country had as many producers. This was all stimulated by its national Informatics plans involving computer manufacturing as well.  Interestingly, to my knowledge the first company to make HDDs in Brazil (in Sao Paulo) was Burroughs, as early as the 1960s.

"In 2001 Samsung announced plans to build an HDD assembly plant in Manaus, but I don’t know if this ever went ahead."
