Unitrends Helped Momentum Group Restore Critical Data

When a SAN failed

Unitrends helped Momentum Group restore critical data when a SAN failed in the company’s data center. The textile company performed Unitrends bare metal restore of a VMware virtualized backup to recover the SAN to its original state.

"The recovery process was quick and easy, which is a testament to how well the Unitrends tools work," John Hester, System Administrator, Momentum Group, said. "I did not even need assistance from support during this process, but when in need, I’ve had nothing but positive experiences with Unitrends support."

Before Momentum Group’s switch to Unitrends, the company used ARCserve and several tape media and drives to serve as its data protection solution. The growing textile business protects roughly 2 TB of data, and the strain of using these various solutions for different platforms was slowing productivity for the IT department and hindering the system’s performance and reliability.

"It was a tedious process prone to failure," Hester said. "As data grew, we simply ran out of hours in the day to complete the backups." Hester went on to relay just how important Unitrends has become to Momentum Group: "We had a VMware virtual machine snapshot that was made prior to a software upgrade and forgotten until months later. The snapshot had grown too large to be deleted, and the virtual-to-virtual transfer to alternate storage recommended by our VMware reseller failed as well. As time went on, more and more of the available space on our SAN was being eaten by the out-of-control snapshot. The solution was a Unitrends bare-metal restore of the VM onto alternate storage, followed by a deletion of the original machine and snapshot. We then did a bare-metal backup of the new VM and restored it to the original SAN storage. I didn’t need assistance from support for this process, which I think is a testament to how well the Unitrends tools work."

"Protecting SANs with and without VMware is something in which we take a great deal of pride," said Mark Campbell, Chief Operating Officer, Unitrends. "We’re excited when we help our customers save money on SAN storage via efficient off-SAN backup and pleased when we can help our customers lower their cost of disaster recovery by substituting expensive SAN replication with our D2D2x (Disk-to-Disk-to-Any) disk, tape, single-tenant private cloud, and multiple-tenant Vault2Cloud public cloud solutions."
