Winchester Systems FlashD2D Automates D2D Backup
Zero downtime, application aware, copies changed blocks
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on October 7, 2010 at 3:03 pmWinchester Systems Inc. announced its FlashD2D Storage Solution that delivers automated, zero-downtime disk-to-disk backups. FlashD2D also offers substantial storage savings by mirroring primary storage to low cost secondary storage.
Disk-to-Disk Backup Cycle
- Initial copy: First mirror operation creates complete copy at low priority and then splits target volume.
- Incremental updates: Target volume is periodically remounted, updated with changed blocks and split again. Source volume is free to operate at full speed.
FlashD2D includes ‘application aware’ server agents that save complete database transactions so that a restore of the database will be in a ‘coherent’ state. FlashD2D operates incrementally after the initial backup and backs up only changed blocks for high efficiency.
FlashD2D uses an effective combination of snapshots and mirroring combined strategically with volume splitting and resynchronization to achieve zero-downtime, low impact, low cost disk-to-disk backup that is ideal for 24×7 operations while also enabling off-line backup to tape.
"Zero-impact backup running automatically will actually have a huge positive impact on IT managers and their operations," declared Mr. Jerry Namery, the chief technology officer for Winchester Systems. "IT managers have waited a long time for this capability and it is now available at low cost in our latest 11th generation FlashDisk RAID disk arrays," he added.
The company’s FlashDisk VX-2300 and FlashDisk VX-3400 disk arrays offer optional low cost Storage Services that implement FlashD2D automated backup using the embedded FlashDisk Global Manager for storage management. These latest FlashDisk arrays support SAS and SATA disks and offer virtualized tiered storage up to 224 TB per disk array. They deliver performance of up to 2,588 MB per second data throughput and 155,000 I/O operations per second.
Mr. Joel Leider, the company’s chief executive officer, explained: "For 24×7 environments that run applications including e-mail, database, e-commerce, FlashD2D offers a very liberating set of backup and restore benefits that enables all the stakeholders in the application to be free of long-standing and traditional constraints and burdens of backup."
