New Version of Racerunner OS by WhipTail Tech

Increasing write IO/s on SSD SAN, $49 for 1.5 TB

WhipTail Tech, manufacturer of the enterprise XLR8r solid-state SAN appliances, has announced the latest version of its Racerunner Operating System (RROS) for the Virtual Desktop and Datacenter XLR8r appliances – Generation 4 (G4).

This updated platform release is the culmination of months of data analysis and performance tuning on WhipTail’s patented RROS, with the end result being dramatic increases in write IOPs as well as a reduction in latency. With the proliferation of both desktop and server virtualization, the IOP speeds of writes is critical in order to provide acceptable performance and, the new RROS offers 250,000 IOPS at 4K size for crypto logically random data.

"This vaults the WhipTail solid-state XLR8r appliances into a position that few, if any, vendors can claim – showing real-world write IOPS at speeds faster than read IOPS," said James Candelaria, CTO of WhipTail Tech. "These are not the commonly seen ‘marketing’ benchmarks that vendors produce based on pristine, controlled lab settings, but rather real-life numbers as seen by our clients."

"With the latest release of our Racerunner Operating System, we are offering a paradigm shift in IOPS speed, as it strikes directly at the need to accommodate for small, random data patterns such as those seen pervasively in virtualized environments. The currently available release of the RROS produces 100,000 write IOP speeds, so the increase to 250,000 IOPS truly moves the goalposts for our XLR8r appliances to continue to accommodate the enterprise’s needs for cloud and virtualized deployments," said Brian Feller, WhipTail’s VP of Operations and Sales. "The write requirements for virtual desktop deployments like VMware’s View and Citrix XenDesktop are typically seen in the 70-80 percent range; thus, this enhancement to our software only adds further credibility to the Virtual Desktop XLR8r as a market leader in supporting enterprise VDI deployments."

In addition to being able to support the new write IOP load, the G4 release will offer performance enhancements in its deduplication engine. "Our clients are seeing tremendous storage savings and efficiency by utilizing our in-line dedupe engine. They’re taking 10 terabytes of data (much of it repetitive OS data in VM environments) and minimizing it to just several hundred gigs – making the G4 version of the RROS even more compelling," said Candelaria.

The G4 version of the RROS platform will be available in Q4 of this year. The G4 platform will be available on WhipTail’s Datacenter XLR8r and Virtual Desktop XLR8r, which are available at prices starting at $49,000 for 1.5 TB.
