Quest Software Partners With Cloudera
To bring Oracle expertise to Hadoop
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on July 16, 2010 at 3:31 pmQuest Software, Inc. announced a partnership with Cloudera to develop an Oracle connector for Apache Hadoop.
Hadoop is an open-source software framework used to store and process complex, large-scale data: petabytes of information often distributed across thousands of servers. The Quest utility, code-named ‘Ora-Oop,’ will provide connectivity between Hadoop and Oracle through an interface that allows for bidirectional, scalable and functional data transfer between Oracle databases and Hadoop.
“Hadoop allows organizations to store and process massive data sets on commodity hardware at a fraction of the cost of high-end relational databases. We see enterprises increasingly experimenting with Hadoop – and especially Cloudera’s Distribution for Hadoop – to achieve these benefits,” said Guy Harrison, director of development at Quest Software, and Oracle ACE. “To fully realize these benefits, organizations with an existing investment in Oracle need a high performance and fully compatible transfer mechanism to move data between Oracle and Hadoop clusters, and the Quest Oracle Connector for Hadoop will provide those capabilities.”
Quest’s new utility will complement Cloudera’s existing open-source SQL-to-Hadoop database import tool, called Sqoop, which is included in current versions of Cloudera’s Distribution for Hadoop. Ora-Oop will support Oracle data types and table variants, and avoid many of the performance issues associated with existing Hadoop-Oracle interfaces.
“Quest holds a long-time legacy of leadership and expertise in the Oracle database tools market, while Cloudera is strongly recognized in the market for commercial Hadoop solutions,” said Dr. Amr Awadallah, co-founder and CTO at Cloudera. “Both companies’ close ties with each of these two communities will enable us to bring a high-end Oracle utility that will empower organizations to connect data in Oracle databases with complex data in Hadoop.”
Ora-Oop will be fully supported by both vendors, and available as a free download on Quest.com and alongside Cloudera’s Distribution for Hadoop (CDH) on Cloudera.com. The utility will be available by the end of 2010. Joint webcasts, whitepapers and other materials on the project will be coming soon.
