Unitrend Archiving System Using Seagate HDDs

For D2D2D and DR on version 5 of backup software

Unitrends announced a new disk-based rotational archiving subsystem for its archive appliances. It is available with the company’s release 5 version of backup software that began shipping last month.

News ImageDisk-based rotational archiving (also called disk-to-disk-to-disk or D2D2D) is an alternative to tape-based rotational archiving (disk-to-disk-to-tape or D2D2T) and to replication. This new disk-based rotational archiving protection is available for USB 2.0 and eSATA devices ranging in price from the desktop 1-bay Recovery-Dock for $60 to the 4-bay 1U form factor Recovery-Archive for $895. Seagate Constellation ES SATA-based 3.5” 7200RPM disk drives from 500GB to 2TB are supported in each. Online- and off-line cataloging as well as append operations are supported to increase utilization of disk media.

Unitrends created the concept of D2D2x in order to give our customers the freedom to use on-premise rotational archiving via disk or tape as well as electronic replication to best meet their disaster recovery needs,” said Mark Campbell, chief operating officer, Unitrends. “Leading edge customers that value the reliability of disk-based archival without high associated WAN bandwidth requirements are flocking to this technology.

Unitrends backup appliance with on-premise rotational archiving is a convenient and affordable solution for handling the explosion of business data that we see occurring,” said Henry Fabian, executive director of marketing, Seagate. “The Seagate Constellation ES family is well-suited for this application, providing an ideal combination of rock-solid reliability and low power-consumption. We are pleased to work with Unitrends to help deliver backup solutions that provide great advantages over tape.
