2.5-inch Toshiba SAS HDD Mounted in 3.5-Inch Bracket

350GB to 600GB, 10,025rpm, 6Gb SAS

Toshiba Storage Device Division (SDD) announced the MBF2xxLRC, a 2.5-inch enterprise HDD mounted in a 3.5-inch bracket.

Following the launch of the 600GB MBF2600RC 2.5-inch enterprise drive in February this year, customer demand steadily increased for small form factor HDDs due to their stability, reliability, and reduced power consumption compared to traditional 3.5-inch drives. To support this demand, Toshiba developed the 3.5-inch bracket, giving IT departments easier access to the benefits of 2.5-inch drives by enabling the small form factor drives to be used in legacy 3.5-inch servers and storage enclosures.

Using the 3.5-inch bracket with the 2.5-inch form factor HDD, IT departments can significantly reduce the effort, cost, and time constraint of infrastructure, design, replacement, and installation when migrating to the latest generation of small form factor enterprise-class HDDs. The MBF2xxLRC is available with capacity points of 300GB, 450GB, and 600GB – equal to the highest capacity point currently available within the entire 2.5 and 3.5-inch form factor enterprise-class segments. With 10,025 RPM spin speed and a 6Gb/s SAS interface, the MBF family also delivers the performance to meet the exacting standards of the enterprise market.

2.5-inch SAS HDDs continue to gain favor for enterprise-class storage solutions where reliability, high capacity, and performance are required, particularly mission-critical, power-conscious, and data-intensive storage applications such as mid-range volume servers, mainstream storage arrays, blade, and rack-mount servers. By incorporating the MBF series 2.5-inch drive in a 3.5-inch bracket, the MBF2xxLRC delivers all the benefits of small form factor technology versus 3.5-inch HDDs including 70 percent less power at idle and approximately one-half the active power.

Making it easier to migrate from 3.5-inch to 2.5-inch HDDs offers organizations greater opportunities to achieve a more efficient and productive IT environment,” said Joel Hagberg, vice president of enterprise marketing at Toshiba Storage Device Division. “Toshiba has applied its hard disk drive engineering expertise to develop the MBF2xxLRC, demonstrating our commitment to provide customers with the opportunity to benefit from small form factor HDDs.”

Toshiba will begin shipping the MBF2xxLRC in July to OEMs and distributors including Avnet, Bell Micro, Ingram Micro, Microland, Synnex, and Tech Data.

Comments

This MBF2xxLRC contains in a 3.5-inch bracket exactly the same 2.5-inch MBF2600RC unit already shipped by Toshiba. That's the same kind of idea WD had with its VelociRaptor.
