… And Unveils Hardware De-Dupe Engine

For large data center interconnects

Infineta Systems, Inc. introduced its groundbreaking system architecture to power a new generation of products to address the need for very high-speed enterprise data center interconnects.

At the center of this architecture is Infineta’s patent-pending Velocity Dedupe Engine, a hardware-based data reduction technology that propels the industry to unprecedented levels of throughput, scalability and bandwidth capacity for addressing the explosion in data center-to-data center traffic. Global 2000 enterprises that are currently adding bandwidth capacity for BC/DR (business continuity/disaster recovery) workflows such as storage replication and backup will instantly benefit from Infineta’s acceleration technologies.

Most large enterprises are dealing with multi-gigabit, critical inter-data center traffic today and expect it to significantly grow in the coming years,” states Joe Skorupa, Research Vice President, Data Center Transformation and Security, Gartner.  “Highly scalable data reduction solutions that improve performance and lower the cost and time to transfer the data are required.”

Taming Explosive Traffic Growth
Today, large enterprises are being overwhelmed by the explosion of inter-data center traffic. Storage replication, remote backup, large data store transfers and site migrations are stressing the high-bandwidth data center interconnect. According to a recently conducted independent customer survey (available for download after registration), the majority of large enterprises with $1 billion USD or more in revenues (68 percent of respondents) will experience at least a doubling or tripling of their data center-to-data center traffic in the next 2-4 years.

The survey goes on to reveal that this growth figure, however large, may pale in comparison to the rate of growth this data center interconnect will see in the years ahead once more traffic types emerge with the adoption of cross-site virtualization, storage federation, and private clouds. In an effort to address this growing problem, organizations are on an unsustainable path toward adding ever more bandwidth while compromising business continuity, resource elasticity and efficiency and data protection.

The value we bring to customers is straightforward – dramatically lower costs and increase control for their critical data center-to-data center traffic,” says Raj Kanaya, co-founder and CEO, Infineta Systems. “Ultimately, customers will be able to leverage the Infineta solution to build a high performance inter-data center fabric, transforming a rigid and inflexible model into an agile enterprise ‘global area network’ of pooled resources for a more powerful and cost-effective computing experience.

Foundational Innovation and Technology
Unlike traditional software-based implementations, Infineta’s Velocity Dedupe Engine is the first-ever deduplication (commonly referred to as ‘dedupe’) implementation in programmable logic, leading to unparalleled throughput while incurring extremely low latencies and maintaining very high data reduction efficiency. The Infineta Velocity Dedupe Engine is an architectural innovation that has been purpose-built for extremely high data rates.

Fundamental to the engine are three key characteristics required to perform an unmatched level of 5x or more data reduction on high-speed network traffic:

  • Distributed processing – specialized components each dedicated to performing essential pipelined functions that execute millions of packet processing decisions simultaneously;
  • Massively parallel design – non-sequential packet analysis combined with multi-stage redundancy removal for the best available dedupe efficacy in the marketplace;
  • Dedupe performed in programmable logic – industry’s first-ever hardware-based network de-duplication that enables sustained high levels of data reduction ratios at any speed.

We are at the doorstep of a major shift in data center architecture where the demarcation lines separating geographically dispersed data centers are gradually being blurred at the network and the storage layer as customers realize the powerful advantages of an infrastructure where services are portable,” says Mornay Van Der Walt, Director of Technical Marketing, VMware. “This type of ‘IT as-a-service’ model depends on a fast, global-scale network of data centers orchestrating and delivering services as if it were one logical, high performance pool. Infineta’s technology can complement VMware vSphere to help enable this emerging enterprise data center architecture.”

Infineta has a low latency and high throughput solution in a cost-effective, next generation form factor to help propel the lower speed WAN acceleration into a new range of high-end applications,” states Denis Martin, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, NaviSite. “In addition to improving the performance of replication and storage backup traffic, this will power the success of distributed cloud applications.”

A full lineup of products built around the Infineta Velocity Dedupe Engine will be generally available in 2H2010.
