AIC FlashServer and Portable Xtore MiniBOD Achieved One Million IO/s

Using LSI 6Gb SAS HBAs

Advanced Industrial Computer, Inc. has achieved 1 million + IOPS (input/output operations per second) and 6,000 MB/s of sustained throughput in a data storage system demonstration.

The solution, showcased at the NAB Show 2010, pushes the boundaries of Gen 2 PCI Express to maximize all available I/O bandwidth for video, audio, film, and animation editing professionals.

This performance is achieved with an AIC 2U 24 SFF 2.5" bay FlashServer and an AIC Xtore MiniBod portable storage device using the LSI 6Gb/s SATA+SAS host bus adapters (HBAs) connected to a variety of industry-leading solid-state drives (SSDs). The demonstration features technologies such as the enhanced bus architecture of the AIC Gemini series motherboard that supports scaling of 6Gb/s performance, a 45nm Intel Xeon 5500 platform architecture, AIC-patented MAX I/O technology and dual I/O hubs. The complete system substantially boosts performance of video-on-demand, digital video/audio downloads and video streams while ensuring security and reliability.

"Storage must allow the provisioning of capacity and/or performance easily, and at a small incremental cost regardless of how large the demand for bandwidth becomes," said Gene Lee, senior vice president, AIC. "With this demonstration we are showing that we can accomplish this with all the functionality and manageability of a large array without the large cost. This type of performance and affordability is critical to the professional broadcast and content creation market segments."

LSI SAS 9200 series HBAs based on 6Gb/s SAS technology are designed to deliver the throughput, IOPS performance and scalability required to meet the demands of the broadcast and content creation market segments. Featuring a PCI Express 2.0 host interface, the LSI adapters deliver twice the throughput rates and scalability of the previous generation products and offer connectivity to 3Gb/s and 6Gb/s SATA and SAS hard drives or solid-state drives, both inside and outside the server chassis. The LSI SAS 9200-8e HBA enables large-scale storage arrays through eight high-speed 6Gb/s ports, supporting up to 512 SATA and SAS physical devices. The LSI SAS 9211-8i HBA provides the greatest available throughput to internal server storage arrays through eight internal 6Gb/s ports, supporting connectivity up to 256 SAS and SATA physical devices.

"Broadcast and content creation companies work under intense pressure to meet final production deadlines and stay within budget," said Suresh Panikar, senior manager, Worldwide Channel Marketing, LSI. "Critical to these efforts are storage solutions that eliminate performance bottlenecks. The ability to exceed 1 million IOPS and 6,000 MB/s of sustained throughput should allow creative professionals to gain real-time access to video and audio files for optimized workflow efficiency."
