For its Multi-screen Foundation
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on April 1, 2010 at 2:50 pmIsilon Systems, Inc. announced that Alcatel-Lucent has selected Isilon IQ to provide the storage infrastructure for its Multi-screen Foundation, which combines Isilon scale-out NAS with video delivery technology from Harmonic to create an open foundation for extending the reach and monetizing multimedia services across multiple screens.
The Multi-screen Foundation provides the infrastructure platform for Alcatel-Lucent’s new set of solutions unifying the delivery of video, TV and multimedia content to any connected device. Using Isilon IQ, the Multi-screen Foundation consolidates all media onto a single, high performance, highly scalable, shared pool of storage, enabling service providers to make their services available on any device, anytime, anywhere, accelerating time-to-market and reducing operational costs.
"With our industry-leading Multi-screen Solutions, we are creating new opportunities for everyone in the digital media value chain by providing a foundation on which new services and content can be offered to consumers quickly, easily and on demand, on all their devices," said Willem Verbiest, VP of Multimedia Solutions activities at Alcatel-Lucent. "However, to achieve our vision, we required best-of-breed data storage that mirrored the flexibility and ease of use offered by our Multi-screens Solutions, while also providing the performance and scalability necessary to support the data-intensive demands of the Multi-screen Foundation. Isilon was the clear choice."
Isilon IQ, featuring its OneFS operating system software, creates a single file system scalable to 10.4 Petabytes (PB) of capacity, 45 Gigabytes per second of aggregate throughput and 1.7 million IOPS of performance, to unify massive amounts of file-based data, such as video, audio and images, simplifying storage management and accelerating time-to-market. Additionally, Isilon’s unique ‘pay-as-you-grow’ scaling of performance and capacity enables service providers to purchase only the storage they require, while maintaining the flexibility to expand the system as needs change, reducing both capital and operational expenditures.
"Alcatel-Lucent’s selection of Isilon as the storage infrastructure for its Multi-screen Foundation is clear validation of Isilon’s compelling value proposition for data-intensive multimedia environments," said Leonard Iventosch, vice president of global channels and OEM, Isilon Systems. "By partnering with Alcatel-Lucent and Harmonic for the Multi-screen Foundation, we are demonstrating our commitment to empowering the next generation of multimedia creation, delivery and access with cost-effective, highly scalable solutions that drive increased productivity and value."
Alcatel-Lucent’s Multi-screen Foundation and its Velocix Digital Media Delivery Platform provide the infrastructure behind the company’s Multi-screen Video Solution. These offerings provide an end-to-end Multimedia Solution set for service providers to extend the reach of profitable multimedia services to their end users – making these services available on any device. Specifically, the Multi-screen Foundation combines technology from Harmonic and Alcatel-Lucent with Isilon scale-out NAS to deliver a modular set of highly-scalable components that allow for incremental deployment and the continuous launch of new multimedia services to any screen: TV, PC and mobile devices.
