GPU/SSD 2U Server From One Stop Systems for HPC
10 teraflops and four 640GB solid-state disk boards
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on November 23, 2009 at 3:32 pmOne Stop Systems, Inc. (OSS), a manufacturer of computer modules and systems, announces the first server to integrate an AMD-based motherboard featuring dual ‘Istanbul’ processors and eight GPU boards providing 10TeraFLOPS compute power.
The server can also accommodate a combination of GPU boards and SSD (solid state drive) boards. Four GPU boards and four 640GB SSD boards provides 5TFLOPS GPU processing and 2.5TB memory in addition to the compute power of the dual six-core processors. In addition, OSS has packed even more storage capacity into the system with four hot swappable hard disk drives and an internal RAID controller. The server is powered by dual, redundant 1,500 watt power supplies and housed in a 2U high chassis designed and manufactured to meet rigorous environmental demands.
"The Integrated GPU Server represents a combination of One Stop Systems’ greatest areas of expertise; designing and manufacturing rugged, rackmount computers and PCI Express design," said Steve Cooper, CEO. "At the heart of this server is the dual Opteron processor board. Built on the SHBe form factor for industrial-grade computing, it’s built to provide long-life service to the most demanding of applications. Then we employed multiple PCIe switches to provide the 80Gb/s bandwidth to each I/O slot. Utilizing the latest AMD-based GPU boards, we are able to produce greater than 10TFLOPS compute power. The system is then powered by dual redundant 1,500 watt power supplies with ample cooling to dissipate that much heat. Together with our Direct Attached GPU Accelerators released earlier this year, OSS has built a formidable family of multi-GPU systems. One Stop Systems is pleased to be partnering with AMD to provide these systems fully configured with your choice of AMD/ATI GPU boards."
AMD-based System Host Board
The motherboard is built on the SHBe (System Host Board Express) form factor and supports two six core Opteron processors and up to 96GB DRAM in six DDR2 DIMM slots. It’s also I/O rich, containing dual Gb Ethernet ports, four USB, PCI Express 2.0, and ATI Radeon graphics. It supports four SATAII/SAS drives and includes an LSI RAID controller.
PCI Express expansion
The system can be configured to provide eight PCIe x16 Gen 2 slots for single-wide I/O cards or four slots for double-wide cards. While GPU’s offer the greatest amount of compute power, customers who want to mix other cards in the system can do so. A common example is to install two or four GPU boards with four SSD (solid state drive) boards.
Further expansion can be accomplished by installing a host cable adapter in one of the PCIe x16 slots and cabling down to an expansion system like the OSS 2U GPU Accelerator, adding another eight PCIe x16 I/O boards to the system. The host cable adapter could also be cabled to a PCIe switch that could provide even further expansion to downstream devices.
Price and Availability
The 2U Integrated GPU Server with dual 2.4Ghz Opteron six-core processors (PN: OSS-PCIe-SYS-IS-2.4), no DRAM, no drives, lists for $6,995. The above server with four AMD 9270 GPU’s (PN: OSS-PCIe-SYS-IS-2.4-9270-4) lists for $12,870 and with eight AMD 9250 GPU’s (PN: OSS-PCIe-SYS-IS-2.4-9250-8) lists for $14,130.
