Two New Isilon NAS With 10PB Single File System and Single Volume
Integrating Hitachi 2TB SATA HDDs
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on November 17, 2009 at 3:39 pmIsilon Systems, Inc. announced the Isilon IQ 72000X and 72NL scale-out NAS products, bringing to market a 10 Petabyte (PB) single file system and single volume to deliver maximum value and efficiency for primary, nearline archive and disk-to-disk backup environments. Leveraging Hitachi’s enterprise-class Ultrastar A7K2000 two Terabyte (2TB) Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) drives, the IQ 72000X and 72NL double the density per rack unit while reducing the overall power and cooling costs per TB by 50 percent.
Combined with Isilon’s guaranteed system utilization of at least 80 percent, these new products deliver the best dollar per TB ratio of any scale-out NAS solution on the market to provide lowest overall total cost of ownership.
"‘Do more with less’ is standard operating procedure in today’s enterprise data center where cost and energy efficiency are paramount to maximizing operating leverage," said Sam Grocott, senior director of product management, Isilon Systems. "However, traditional SAN and NAS make this impossible to achieve as wasted capacity, storage sprawl and rising data center costs are simply unavoidable. With the new 72000X and 72NL, Isilon offers a vastly different approach – get more, pay less and enable business growth."
"Dense drives such as SATA drives represent the best value in enterprise storage (they can be as much as 50 percent less expensive than low-density, high-performance drives on a drive-for-drive basis, and an even better value when measuring cost per Gigabyte (GB), and the more you can use them, the more cost-effective the environment will be." How Efficient is Your Storage Environment, Forrester Research, Inc., October 22, 2009.
72000X: Performance, Scalability and Value
The Isilon IQ 72000X is the latest addition to Isilon’s X-Series, delivering more than 10 PB of capacity and over 40 Gigabytes per second (GBps) of aggregate throughput from a single file system. Leveraging Isilon’s OneFS operating system and Hitachi’s 2TB SATA drives, the 72000X allows businesses to linearly scale capacity and performance on-demand as data grows, minimizing capital and operational expenditures while driving greater IT agility. As with all Isilon IQ products, the 72000X delivers a single point of management for the entire system, providing unmatched management simplicity to reduce IT costs and staff requirements.
72NL: Breakthrough Economics in Nearline Archiving
The Isilon IQ 72NL houses 72 TB of raw storage in a 4U chassis and scales to more than 10 PB in a single file system, delivering the best dollar per TB ratio of any scale-out NAS solution available. With industry-leading, guaranteed storage utilization of 80 percent and the highest density enterprise-class SATA drives available, Isilon’s IQ 72NL drives down power and cooling costs per TB by 50 percent, delivering near-tape value with near-primary accessibility to offer the lowest overall total cost of ownership. Featuring Isilon’s OneFS operating system and up to N+4 data protection, the 72NL delivers unmatched ease of use, scalability and reliability for nearline archive and disk-to-disk backup environments. Additionally, when combined with Isilon’s SyncIQ asynchronous replication software, the 72NL delivers a complete solution for disk-based disaster recovery to preserve mission-critical data and ensure business continuity.
"In today’s data-intensive IT environments, it is absolutely critical that data storage provides the best balance of capacity, reliability, low power and cost to minimize expenditures and maximize productivity," said Brendan Collins, vice president of marketing, Hitachi GST. "Isilon’s use of Hitachi’s A7K2000 in the 72NL and 72000X demonstrates their commitment to delivering systems that do exactly that – drive greater data center efficiency and productivity at less cost."
Pricing and Availability
Both the Isilon IQ 72000X and 72NL are currently available in limited quantities and will be generally available in January 2010. The 72000X has a list price of $175,000 per node, while the 72NL is listed at $115,000 per node.
