Jon Toigo
He praised the product’s backup functionality, calling out its impressive set of new features and functions that can help lower costs and improve data protection efficiency, including integrated storage resource management, block level deduplication and virtual backup and restore capabilities.
CA commissioned the study by TPI Technologies, Inc. – the testing laboratory for Toigo and the Data Management Institute – which found that CA ARCserve Backup "represents a tremendous value for its price" and stated that it "should be part of the data protection kit used by any company of any size that is concerned about the protection of its data assets."
The lab also measured backup and restore performance for VMware and Microsoft virtual servers, and the impact of CA ARCserve Backup’s data deduplication. Test results were impressive across the board, including close to a 400% reduction of backup data size with CA ARCserve Backup’s deduplication.
Toigo concluded that CA has pressed into unexpected territory with the integration of basic storage resource management functionality into CA ARCserve Backup. He praised the extensive reporting capabilities that help enable administrators to get valuable information on their backup infrastructure – giving them greater ability to tune and troubleshoot backup operations.
"With the release of CA ARCserve 12.5, CA has set new standards for data protection software," said Toigo, CEO of Toigo Partners International, 26-year veteran disaster recovery planner, and author of five books on disaster recovery planning. "The combination of virtual tape technology and deduplication capabilities, combined with support for both physical and virtualized IT environments, make CA ARCserve Backup a powerful tool for safeguarding irreplaceable and business-critical data assets."
Other key findings in the report include:
- CA’s integration of deduplication functionality with the product’s core backup capabilities and support for both disk and physical tape targets gives tremendous value to the consumer.
- The integrated data deduplication also delivers more value than could be derived from investments in standalone deduplication hardware appliances, especially in small- and medium-sized enterprises
- CA has added enormous value in release 12.5 of CA ARCserve Backup by integrating virtual tape library, deduplication, and storage resource management discovery and reporting capabilities.
- The SRM dashboard and print reports in CA ARCserve Backup add enormous value to standard reports one would expect from any backup/restore tool, providing backup administrators a way to better group backup jobs so that operational backup time estimates become more dependable.
- CA ARCserve Backup support for tape and disk targets and centralized dashboard configuration, monitoring, management and the control of backup and restore processes is a key value of the product, facilitating the streamlining of data protection process management.
"Customers need backup and restore products to leverage new technologies that help them cut costs and improve efficiency," said Adam Famularo, senior vice president and general manager for CA’s Recovery Management and Data Modeling Business Unit. "We are pleased that industry experts like Jon Toigo are finding that CA ARCserve Backup is meeting those challenges and providing the best business value."
