Lawson Chooses EMC/Data Domain De-Dupe
For backup and recovery

Lawson is well-recognized convenience store chain operating nationwide in Japan. The company has chosen to implement a Data Domain solution to bolster its backup and recovery processes efficiently, as well as to simplify its storage operations and management.
Key purchase decision factors for the Data Domain solution included its easy implementation into Lawson’s existing backup processes and its EMC NetWorker backup software environment. Energy efficiency and environmental sustainability, such as limiting the creation of C02 exhaust and minimizing data center power, cooling and footprint are important corporate initiatives for Lawson and, as such, the Data Domain solution’s minimal data center footprint and effective storage utilization were also important considerations.
"As our franchise operations continue to expand, it became clear that our previous data center backup solution for business applications such as Microsoft Exchange, and Oracle database could no longer keep pace," said, Yasuharu Kobatake, Director, IT Station, Corporate Systems & System Platform Section for Lawson, Inc. Our evaluation reinforced Data Domain’s enterprise reliability, environmental efficiency as well as seamless integration and simplified management within our NetWorker backup infrastructure."
Lawson chose to implement a high-performance Data Domain DD580 system with three Data Domain ES20 Expansion Shelves and the Lawson IT team notes the increasing effectiveness of deduplication on retained backups over time should enable better information management control and continued cost reductions.
Lawson moved the Data Domain system into production earlier in 2009, and continues to project for future backup and disaster recovery architecture and related professional services utilizing EMC Data Domain.

EMC’s family of Data Domain deduplication storage systems easily integrate into most IT environments by supporting leading enterprise backup and archive applications as well as a variety of network types and transfer protocols simultaneously. These include CIFS or NFS fileserver over Ethernet, Virtual Tape Library over Fibre Channel and the OpenStorage interface from Symantec Veritas NetBackup.
