As the successor of the DS209+, the DS209+II features upgraded hardware configurations with 1.06 GHz CPU, 64 bit memory bus, floating point computing, 512MB DDRII RAM, one Gigabit LAN port, three USB2.0 ports, and one eSATA port. The DS209+II is shipped with the system software, Disk Station Manager 2.1.

The DS209+II answers users’ needs for high performance. Synology’s laboratory test results show that under RAID 1 configuration, Windows upload speed measures at more than 48 MB/Sec on average, and the download speed 52 MB/Sec. "The web server responsiveness rate is remarkable. It takes only 85.24 seconds to handle 1,000 simultaneous requests," said Derren Lu, software development director of Synology. "As for the photo converting rate, it only takes 19 seconds to convert 52 MB of 10 high resolution photos to thumbnails in Photo Station 3."

The Disk Station Manager 2.1 includes a variety of robust applications. Web Station enables corporations to host multiple websites with PHP and MySQL. File Station 2 allows authorized users to modify privileges of files and folders. User Home feature automatically creates a home folder and a personal website address for each user. Mail Station enables DS209+II becoming a mail server and supports Outlook-style web mail, SMTP, POP3 and IMAP. Several backup alternatives, including Encrypted Network Backup, Local Backup and Desktop Backup and RAID 0/1 configuration options safeguard critical business data.

When equipped with Synology 2.5" Disk Holders, the DS209+II becomes compatible with 2.5" hard drives. The smart fan design slows down the fan spinning inside the DS209+II, resulting in quieter operation, power savings, and reliability.

All Synology products are energy saving. Compared with an average PC server which consumes approximately 200 watts power, the DS209+II consumes only 30 watts under normal operation with two hard drives installed. The scheduled power on/off function and HDD hibernation further minimize power consumption.
