Dot Hill Partners With Uniadex in Japan

Dot Hill Systems Corp. announced a partnership with UNIADEX Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Nihon Unisys, Ltd., to market a Virtual Tape Library (VTL) solution to customers in Japan.
 
The bundle consists of the Dot Hill 2330 iSCSI RAID storage array and NetVault : Backup from BakBone Software. NetVault: Backup’s VTL and Shared Virtual Tape Library (SVTL) options provide high speed, disk-to-disk backup and recovery performance by creating a virtual tape library on disk. Designed to run on Sun Fire servers and the Miracle Linux platform over an Ethernet network, the UNIADEX VTL solution integrates industry-leading components into a complete, lab-tested, tape-free backup and recovery solution using existing Ethernet infrastructure.
 
In recent years, the popularity of VTL solutions has continued to rise. “Virtual tape libraries (VTLs) have come of age, solidifying their position as a preferred technology for tackling backup windows and data growth,” according to Kevin Komiega of InfoStor Magazine, in a feature highlighting the results of a recent survey of North American IT professionals conducted on behalf of the publication by the TechValidate research firm.

The survey results indicated that most users place VTLs on a pedestal when compared to tape libraries. Managing VTLs is considered a simpler task than managing tape by 66 percent of those polled, while 77 percent say VTLs are easier to scale. UNIADEX is taking this another step by integrating a VTL solution with iSCSI storage.
