New EMC Solutions for Archiving, e-Discovery and Compliance

EMC Corporation announced EMC SourceOne – a new family of products and solutions for archiving, e-discovery and compliance – aimed at helping companies centrally manage multiple content types in order to apply consistent retention, disposition and overall lifecycle management. With EMC SourceOne, customers can save more than 50 percent in total cost of ownership, achieve payback on the solution in as little as 12 months, ensure compliance to internal governance policies and external industry regulations and mitigate risks associated with e-discovery.

EMC SourceOne delivers an integrated approach to information governance through the use of archiving as a foundational technology, enhanced by retention and disposition capabilities for effective information management as well as e-discovery as a repeatable business process. Initially, EMC SourceOne will archive e-mail and instant messages. Support for files, SharePoint, enterprise applications, XML and other content types will be added in the future. For companies with 1,000 mailboxes, savings from EMC SourceOne will average $1 million in a single year. Companies can also realize a reduction of up to 60 percent in storage and backup costs.

Effective information management enables organizations to reduce the amount of content retained by an organization and ensure that high-value information is properly managed, safe-guarded and leveraged. According to Gartner’s report, E-Discovery: Project Planning and Budgeting 2008-2011, dated February 6, 2008:

• Up to 90 percent of stored data is redundant or out of date
• E-mail files, mainly .PST and files from other systems, consume up to 50 percent of network drive storage
• One gigabyte of data can result in $18,750 in legal review costs

Gartner also states that in 2008 and 2009, companies without an active policy and strategy for content archiving solutions can spend one third more on e-discovery than those with content archiving solutions.

• EMC SourceOne Discovery Manager provides high volume discovery search and collection for e-mail archived by the SourceOne Email Management. It can quickly find, safely hold, efficiently cull and defensibly produce archived e-mail in response to legal/regulatory notice and/or corporate policy complaint. Discovery Manager is built around a legal matter or case metaphor and supports secure authorized investigator access, defensible collection results and chain of custody. Discovery Manager provides full international support and offers a localized interface in four languages — French, Italian, German and Spanish.
• EMC SourceOne Discovery Collector is a set of complementary partner appliance offerings that automate the in-house identification, collection, preservation, and policy management of unstructured content that resides "in the wild" on data sources such as desktops, laptops, common Internet file systems (CIFS) and network file systems (NFS), networked attached storage, Microsoft Exchange, SharePoint and other content management repositories.

Access Intelligence is an information and marketing company headquartered in Rockville, Md. serving the energy, chemical, defense, aerospace and communications markets. The company deployed EMC SourceOne to meet human resources compliance needs and minimize the size of its information stores. "Like most companies, our global users rely on e-mail as the primary means of interacting with customers. We have massive information stores that contain e-mails with large file attachments," said Tom Leizear, Director of IT at Access Intelligence. "During the first 40 days of production deployment, we saw a 66 percent reduction in mailbox size with EMC SourceOne Email Management. In addition, we were able to reduce backup and recovery time from two and a half hours to 30 minutes."

"Many of the e-mail archiving solutions in use today have been around awhile and are getting pretty long in the tooth. Products will need to be re-written to improve performance and to incorporate new capabilities," said Brian Babineau, Senior Analyst, Enterprise Strategy Group. "To its advantage, EMC happens to be one of the first to tackle this challenge. But EMC SourceOne Email Management is not like version 1.0 code. EMC has a legacy of experience in creating e-mail archiving software going back to 2000."

Availability
