Amanda Enterprise and Zmanda Recovery Manager certified

Zmanda, the leader in open source backup and recovery software, announced that its products, Amanda Enterprise 3.0, and Zmanda Recovery Manager for MySQL 3.0, have been certified on SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 from Novell, the Linux platform that drives mission-critical computing from the desktop to the data center, for physical and virtual environments.

Amanda Enterprise is an open source backup and recovery solution that combines fast installation, simplified management, enterprise-class functionality, and low-cost subscription fees. Amanda Enterprise only uses standard formats and tools — effectively freeing companies from being locked into a vendor to recover archived data.

Zmanda Recovery Manager (ZRM) is a solution used to automate backup and recovery of MySQL databases. ZRM includes unique, enterprise-grade features such as MySQL storage engine and snapshot intelligence, replication support, integration of backup operations with MySQL binary logs, and the Zmanda Management Console — a powerful Web-based graphical user interface that lets DBAs control backup and recovery across all MySQL servers from any browser enabled device.

"SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 is an ideal platform for the business realities of today’s heterogeneous environments: physical or virtual, and eventually the cloud," said Justin Steinman, vice president, solutions and product marketing at Novell. "Zmanda’s open source backup solutions add confidence to mission critical use of SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 and mitigate risk in these tough economic times."

"The availability of Amanda Enterprise and Zmanda Recovery Manager for the SUSE Linux Enterprise platform is a tremendous addition to Zmanda’s ever increasing portfolio of supported platforms,” said Chander Kant, chief executive officer, Zmanda. “SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 and its storage and virtualization features allow us to provide our customers with complete data protection solutions with the lowest cost of ownership.”

SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 delivers innovations in several areas, including appliances, interoperability and mission-critical computing. Customers are demanding easier and faster installations for their applications, and Zmanda is exploring the development of virtual appliances that deliver pre-configured backup solutions. SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 now includes a minimum configuration of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, called SUSE Linux Enterprise JeOS (Just enough Operating System), that enables ISVs such as Zmanda to quickly and easily deliver virtual appliances.

Zen Innovations, a Kehrsatz, Switzerland-based provider of powerful web-based applications that aggregates all original trade statistics from the world’s largest 55 principal trading countries was an early adopter of Amanda Enterprise on SUSE Linux Enterprise.

We have been very successfully running Amanda Enterprise on SUSE Linux Enterprise for several months to protect our network of Linux, Mac OS X, Windows and Solaris systems,” said Sergio Laberer, managing director, Zen Innovations. “We are pleased that Zmanda has certified Amanda Enterprise 3.0 on the latest edition of SUSE Linux Enterprise and look forward to installing it in our environment.
