Copan Increased Sales by 40% in 2008

And now has 250 installations.

COPAN Systems, Inc. announced results for year end 2008 in multiple areas of its business including: customer growth, vertical markets expansion, partner ecosystem growth, and massive growth in volumes of storage under management. The announcement coincides with this week’s news that the company received $18.5 million in new capital funding.

We’re very proud of what we accomplished in 2008 in a very difficult business environment,” said Mark Ward, president and CEO of COPAN Systems. “Our performance reflects the strength of our team and the significant cost and environmental benefits our solutions deliver for customers. With the current economic environment and the increased focus on ‘real’ operational cost savings, we expect to continue to see strong demand for our technology through 2009 and beyond.”

Data centers and data storage are prime targets for cost and energy reductions. According to InfoPro, a leading technology research analyst firm, forty percent of power consumption in today’s data center is utilized for storage. COPAN Systems specializes in storing fixed, long-term, infrequently-accessed data, also known as Persistent Data. This Persistent Data represents more than 75 percent of all data currently under management. COPAN’s Enterprise MAID technology platform, purpose-built for the cost-effective and energy-efficient storage of persistent data, delivers significant user benefits. Users can save 85 percent on power and 70 percent on data center space with COPAN versus traditional storage systems. The company leveraged this strong value proposition to strengthen key areas of its business in 2008:

Growing Customer Base across Key Vertical Markets

In 2008, COPAN saw a 40% sales increase and a strong adoption of its technology solutions in healthcare, media & entertainment, technology, financial services and government. The company now has over 250 persistent data storage solutions installed in 18 different countries including the largest archiving and data protection implementations in the world.

Current implementations of COPAN’s Enterprise MAID technology solutions include:

  • Financial Services: Two major financial exchanges in the U.S. protecting and archiving over 3PB’s of secure trading data, and four major institutional banks in the U.S., Europe and Japan protecting and Deduplicating over 10PB’s of data.
  • Healthcare – A large multi-national pharmaceutical company, two national health systems in Europe, three regional medical centers in the U.S. and a major healthcare services company in the U.S. COPAN is the data protection architecture for the world’s largest healthcare IT project, we currently support over 2.5PB’s of data protection storage.
  • Media & Entertainment – A large national media services provider in the U.S., two leading online social application service providers, two of the largest Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in North America, a global leader in consumer entertainment, and the world’s #1 game development and electronics provider.
  • Government – Large implementations for Intelligence, defense, police, airport security, healthcare, energy, and government agencies in the U.S., U.K., Australia, Germany, France and Japan,
  • Global 1000 – Large implementations at multi-national corporations in consumer electronics, manufacturing, and telecommunications.

COPAN also expanded its partner strategy and ecosystem in 2008, including:

  • A new service partnership with IBM’s global services team,
  • A strategic relationship with Quantum Corp., the leading global specialist in backup, recovery and archive. The combined COPAN-Quantum solution delivers a file-based archive data management system for unstructured data that allows organizations to store and share a high-speed pool of digital assets including media content and captured data.
  • A technology partnership with ByCast inc., the standard for high performance storage software based on the next generation grid computing technology scaling fixed content and unstructured data archives to Petabyte scale.

The company expanded its channel partner program
in the U.S. and abroad to extend its reach in the market.
Some of the highlights include:

  • The launch of a new International Channel Partner Program that expands COPAN’s ability to deliver its patented MAID technology embedded into COPAN’s persistent data storage solutions to enterprise customers worldwide.
  • A new agreement with Promark Technology, a premier value added distributor in the United States, which extends COPAN’s penetration into the government market beyond its current 700 percent growth rate in the Federal sector since 2006. Promark will distribute COPAN’s solutions to value-added resellers (VARs) in the federal government market making it easier than ever for government agencies to leverage COPAN’s technology.
  • COPAN also established channel partnerships with Forsythe and Razor Tech in the U.S., Eurodys and COMPAREX in Europe, Nox and CTC in Japan, and Dataflex in Australia.

COPAN also continued its commitment to technology innovation in 2008 evidenced
by a number of product-related highlights, including:

  • The receipt of five new patents, adding to an existing portfolio of patents covering packaging, interconnect, background processing, and data integrity checks. In an industry where storage density, energy efficiency, scalable performance, and system reliability are paramount, these new patents drive COPAN Systems technology beyond traditional metrics and ahead of the competition.
  • The launch of COPAN’s new ‘Persistent Data Discovery Tool‘ helps organizations better identify and target the vast amounts of persistent data in their storage networks and the massive economic and environmental costs associated with storing it.
  • Introduction of the COPAN Systems Revolution 100T Remote Office Branch Office (ROBO) offering, a new solution with Deduplication capabilities that delivers a fast, reliable and secure back up for remote offices. Combined with its intelligent replication and highly scalable Revolution 300T system with Enterprise MAID technology at the primary or disaster recovery data center, the new system provides an enterprise wide disaster recovery solution that cost effectively meets growing recovery report objective (RPO) and recovery time objective (RTO) service level agreements.
  • A number of enhancements to its Revolution 300 Series Platform providing increased performance and capacity to what was already and continues to be the industry’s densest and most cost effective storage solution for the long-term storage, protection and retrieval of persistent data.
  • Enterprise SATA drive reliability increases with COPAN’s MAID technology in each of the Revolution 300 series products.

Massive Amounts of Enterprise Information
Under Management

COPAN’s customers have implemented its persistent data solutions to dramatically reduce their storage capital and storage operating budgets (data center footprint, cooling, power consumption, and maintenance costs) by 90%, while improving reliability and information availability. Some key metrics in 2008 include:

  • Over 80 Petabytes (PB) of Persistent Data storage solutions shipped to some of the world’s largest organizations.
  • The world’s largest scaling Data Protection and Deduplication solutions installed with individual site installations consisting of over 4PB’s of data.
  • The petascale implementation of Petabyte archive solutions, Petabyte HSM solutions, and Petabyte Disk to Disk (D2D) data protection systems.
  • Data center cost savings realized – multiple customers saving over $1m per year in power, cooling and space, with the 90% reduction in energy consumed by COPAN’s Persistent Data solutions vs. previously installed Transactional systems, as well as a 200% reduction in maintenance costs.
