PCI-SIG Reaches Milestone of 1,000 Member Companies Worldwide
To accelerate future of I/O innovation by looking toward emerging applications such as AI, ML and HPC
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on December 10, 2024 at 2:53 pmPCI-SIG, the organization responsible for the widely adopted PCI Express (PCIe) standard, announced that it has reached 1,000 member companies.
PCIe technology was 1st introduced in 2003 and is a key I/O interconnect for the storage industry and beyond. PCI-SIG, which marked 30 years of innovation in 2022, celebrates this achievement in anticipation of the forthcoming PCIe 7.0 specification, targeted for member release in 2025.
“Over the past 32 years, PCI-SIG’s diverse member companies around the world make us special and have driven the development of the reliable, interoperable and backwards compatible PCIe interconnect, which has served as a building block of the storage and computing industry,” said Al Yanes, president and chairperson, PCI-SIG. “As we reflect on this historic milestone and look towards the future, we are excited to see how PCI-SIG members continue to innovate to expand PCIe technology for emerging and future applications like AI, ML and HPC.”
PCI-SIG has developed multiple key technologies, including the PCI specification and 6 generations of the PCIe specification. Recent innovations include the new CopprLink Internal and External cable specifications, released earlier this year, and new workgroups exploring Optical connections.
PCI-SIG’s advantages:
- Backwards compatible specifications – PCI-SIG members can plug previous add-in cards on earlier versions of PCIe architecture and vice versa
- Compliance Events – Free workshops that allow members to test their new PCIe products
- Reasonable and non-discriminatory (RAND) IP policy
- Single-tier membership – Ensures all member companies have access to the same services and any member can run for the Board of Directors
- Specification development policy – Allows members to review specifications as they are developed
- Developers conferences/webinars – Free access to educational resources
