New DNA Data Storage Alliance Spec Passes Pre-publishing Approval

Data stability eval method for DNA storage containment systems

DNA can survive for millennia in the wild (e.g., recovery of DNA in 2 million+ year old fossils), but digital data encoded in DNA will be stored in manufactured DNA Containment Systems (DCS).

Users must be able to compare media durability claims from different DCS vendors who will deliver solutions with varying cost and complexity of use. The DNA Stability Evaluation Method for DNA Data Storage Containment Systems spec addresses this need for comparison by standardizing an experimental flow for calculating the time it takes to where only half of the DNA remaining in a DCS is recoverable (half life), thus enabling vendor durability claims to be compared. The v1.0 spec will be published in December 2024 after completing SNIA IP review.

New DNA Storage and Computing Technology
Researchers at Johns Hopkins and North Carolina State universities have developed DNA storage and computing technology that “could put a thousand laptops” worth of data into DNA-based storage. That’s the same size as a pencil eraser. Read about it here.Take a deeper dive with this “Science Friday” podcast featuring lead author Albert Keung: “Using DNA To Boost Digital Data Storage And Processing.”

Is DNA the Future of Digital Data Storage?
Featuring industry leaders Luis Ceze of Octo AI, Karin Strauss of Microsoft Research, Robert Grass of ETH Zürich, and Emily Leproust of Twist Bioscience (DNA Data Storage Alliance member), this “Chemistry World” article discusses how DNA offers a compact, durable and low maintenance way to store our precious memories.
