PoINT Software Achieves Veeam Ready Validation
For tape integration with Backup & Replication version 12.1.
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on March 7, 2024 at 2:00 pmPoINT Software & Systems GmbH is the first Veeam Technology Alliance Partner to achieve Veeam Ready validation for the new Veeam Backup & Replication version 12.1 with the S3-to-Tape product PoINT Archival Gateway 4.0.
In the course of the close cooperation and technology partnership between the 2 companies, Archival Gateway has been validated as the first solution for the integration of tape storage systems in the archive tier of a Veeam Scale-out Backup Repository.
The latest version of Backup & Replication, the foundation of the Veeam Data Platform, supports object storage based on Amazon S3 Glacier as target storage in the Archive Tier. This additional backup storage tier was introduced for archiving and cost saving purposes. This enables Backup & Replication to integrate the tape-based object storage Archival Gateway via its Glacier-compatible functionality as an on-prem Glacier solution in the Archive Tier.
For integration with VBR 12.1, Archival Gateway supports the archiving extensions of the Veeam Smart Object Storage API (SOSAPI) in particular. Archival Gateway uses S3 object locking in combination with tape to provide “true immutable storage” and maximum protection vs. cyberattacks for backups.
The combination of Backup & Replication v12.1 and Archival Gateway 4.0 enables the integration of tape in the archive tier via the standardized Amazon S3 Glacier interface. Compared to cloud backup.
This on-prem Glacier solution with Archival Gateway offers advantages:
- No ingest, egress and transaction costs (as common with some cloud providers),
- Ransomware and cybercrime protection through Air Gap (True Immutable Storage),
- No vendor lock-in regarding storage hardware,
- Data sovereignty ensured by on-prem solution,
- Sustainability through lower energy consumption and lower CO²
