Phison Expands IMAGIN+ Service for Custom-Designed Flash Solutions

Enlarges portfolio with Seagate, and Works with Skycorp to bring custom flash performance to space-based data facilities.

Phison Electronics Corp. is working with ttechnology industry innovators to provide its IMAGIN+ enterprise flash memory platform for use cases in AI and edge deployments, high-performance computing, and other data-intensive workloads.

A flash innovation leader for more than 20 years, it introduces the IMAGIN+ customization service. Leading OEM, ODM, and high-tech manufacturers rely on the company to deliver design-in, high-density, high-bandwidth, and low-power flash solutions at accelerated, R&D-driven time-to-market limits. The company is collaborating closely with global storage solution provider Seagate Technology to expand their offerings of high-performance enterprise flash. In addition, it is working with space logistics provider Skycorp to provide custom data solutions for use in the International Space Station, as well as for future use cases on the moon and Mars.

R&D-focused flash solutions: The IMAGIN+ advantage
“Advancing the state-of-the-art in flash technologies requires large and ongoing investments in R&D, which is why the vast majority of Phison’s operating budget is dedicated to just that – more than well over 2x the closest competition,” said Michael Wu, president and GM, Phison US. “We remain committed to that 80% operational investment, as it is essential to maintaining our technology lead and ensuring our enterprise customers can keep data strategically engaged, results-focused, and more sustainably scalable across the AI Era’s rapidly transforming digital landscape.”

With IMAGIN+, the firm delivers customized value-added solutions and services for applications requiring the highest data throughput within specified power budgets. This includes providing the flash memory based on customer application scenarios, software, and functional hardware requirements.

In addition, the company is working with Seagate to expand the companies’ flash memory portfolio of next-gen high-performance, high-density enterprise NVMe SSDs. The new SSDs will help enterprises lower TCO through increased storage density, lower power consumption, and higher performance.

Phison and Seagate have also entered a long-term collaboration that will strengthen the development cycle and distribution of enterprise flash memory, focusing heavily on R&D for solutions that support AI, edge computing, HPC, and other next-gen applications that require maximum data performance and endurance with the lowest power footprint.

“Seagate’s decades of expertise in enterprise storage combined with Phison’s ability to create highly customized flash memory solutions with industry leading time-to-market enables us to deliver flash memory solutions that are more than just the sum of their parts,” said Brian Stark, principal engineer, Seagate. “We look forward to continuing the collaboration between Seagate and Phison to advance innovation in the high-performance, low-power flash necessary for enterprise organizations driving advancements in everything from autonomous driving to industrial farming to space exploration and beyond.”

Phison works with Skycorp to deliver flash memory solutions for space exploration. It is also working with Skycorp and other leading innovators in space logistics and exploration to provide flash memory solutions that can endure the harsh conditions of outer space. It already has flash memory solutions deployed in the International Space Station as part of an Intelligent Space System Interface experiment, as well as on the Mars Perseverance Rover. The work with Skycorp will continue the company’s out-of-this-world expansion into the final frontier, utilizing high endurance IMAGIN+ flash solutions for missions that include the eventual construction of a data center on the moon.

To secure those and future opportunities, the company had to gain NASA Technology Readiness Level 6 (TRL-6) certification. Tests include simulating deep cryogenic temperatures and vacuum conditions found on the moon. An electromagnetic environment qualification was also completed. In addition, firm’s flash technology passed stress and environmental tests that simulated the launch on the SpaceX Falcon 9. Skycorp conducted these tests at government and commercial test facilities in Silicon Valley.
