Secure Data Recovery Services Restores Data from Failed Nuclear Power Plant Workstation

A certified data recovery engineer from Secure Data Recovery Services restored access to lost data for a critical workstation that suddenly went offline at an Arkansas-based nuclear power plant that serves 728,000 customers in 63 countries and employs over 3,500 people.

A security officer at the Nuclear One Generating Station in Russellville, AR, contacted Secure Data Recovery Services when a Sun Microsystems SPARCstation 5 Aurora workstation that stored historical data vital for the plant’s operation went offline.

One of the single-processor workstation’s 2 IBM drives had failed in 2015 and was removed. The second failed and took the workstation offline earlier this year when an attempted reboot sent the system into an endless boot cycle.

Secure Data Recovery Services dispatched one of its specialists to the Russellville plant with a certified clean bench, which serves as a particle-free mobile cleanroom, to evaluate the failed SPARCstation onsite.

The onsite specialist conducted a visual inspection for any sign of abnormalities, tested PCB and power functions, and analyzed the appropriate SMART attributes. Using specialized software and hardware utilities, the specialist was able to meet all the objectives necessary to access and extract the lost data from Entergy’s legacy computer system.

The full contents of the workstation’s failed drive-about 1GB  of data-was safely recovered and stored on a transfer drive supplied by the nuclear plant.
