Promise JBOD VTrak J5960 Appliance Approved by Toshiba Following Testing
Certified 80 Plus Platinum and Energy Star Ready for high power conversion efficiency at different loads: 91% efficiency for 20% loads, 94% efficiency for 50% loads, and 91% efficiency for 100% loads
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on March 30, 2022 at 2:01 pmPromise Technology, Inc. has received approval from Toshiba Electronics Europe GmbH following stringent testing of its enterprise-level green JBOD VTrak J5960.
According to the International Energy Agency, the 40% surge of global internet traffic in 2020 due to increased video streaming, video conferencing, online gaming and social networking has seen rising data demand like never before. Global data center electricity usage in 2020 was 200-250 TWh, or around 1% of global final electricity demand.
In the run up to CloudFest 2022, the ≠1 cloud computing conference, on March 22-24 in Germany, the rise in storage demand and move towards cloud-based storage solutions is seeing a concerted industry transition towards ‘green’ cloud storage. The J5960 aligns with one of the key themes at this year’s CloudFest: The Sustainable Cloud.
“Energy crisis is now a real challenge to all enterprises since a confluence of interconnected factors has created turmoil in the energy market. That’s the factor drives the creation of VTrak J5960 to support our customers in worldwide to manage the tension of energy cost and comply with the sustainability regulations,” said Alice Chang, CMO, Promise. “In addition, VTrak J5960 is designed for a well-balanced ‘performance’ and ‘power saving’, offering a well-rounded solution to solve the dilemma.”
“As a member of a society facing issues that include energy shortages, resource depletion, and climate change, Toshiba will commit to strengthening activities that contribute to social sustainability. Guided by this commitment, Toshiba had the chance to test and evaluate Promise VTrak J5960 in our German Lab with 60 Toshiba Enterprise HDDs with 18TB data storage capacity. The test report confirms the joint efforts with Promise to offer sustainable Green-JBOD solution to data centers.” said Larry Martinez-Palomo, GM, storage products division, Toshiba.
Sustainable Cloud
The transition towards sustainable cloud aims to reduce the high amounts of power consumed and heat produced by data centers. Often, cooling systems that serve to combat rising temperatures caused by legacy storage solutions, add to data centers’ carbon footprint.

With the J5960’s smaller energy intake and redundancy that nonetheless produces performance output, data centers will be able to pass the benefits of maintenance, safer operations, and lower power consumption to customers.
In addition to supporting the company’s Green DNA, J5960 also provides data centers ease of configuring and setting features such as having its top cover fixed on rack, cable-less design, IO-Module (IOM) replacement on the front side, hot replacement, and a support service.
Power measurement setup In Toshiba HDD Lab
The Toshiba lab report highlighted the use of an accuracy professional power analyzer (R&S HMC8015) for precise measurement of the power consumption. The results show a value about 100W for a dual IOM JBOD without drives. About 300W as ‘idle with drives’ is also a low value, as other 60 bay-JBODs start from 400W and more. Moreover, a lambda factor of 0.96 means that the ratio of reactive power generated by the power supply units is extremely low. The J5960’s default setting which sets all SAS drives to ‘Idle’ when not accessed for 2mn, resulted in reduced power consumption in various drive configurations.
Toshiba was able to show aggregate performances of 60 HDDs of up to 15GB/s sequential throughput and over 30,000 of random IO/s, while the cooling and airflow management of the JBOD supports long lifetime and reliability of the HDDs by keeping full operational temperatures lower than 14°C above ambient temperature.
Chang said, “As data demand rises exponentially, data centers need partners they can trust in the sustainable cloud and intelligent edge spaces. Promise has continuously supported data centers for over a decade, and now our track record and proven reliability is further boosted by the VTrak J5960, our battle-tested high throughput, large capacity, and comprehensive green JBOD.”
