actidata Ti-NAS QT 5-Bay Tape-in-NAS Storage Platform With Integrated LTO Drive

The company located in Germany, relies on selected and server components and combines a NAS system with an LTO drive in a robust desktop chassis.

Thanks to the 2 optical 10GbE interfaces, the Windows Server 2019 IoT based platform can be integrated into networks and operates best in a separate fire section. Deployed as an open platform, any Windows Server 2019 compatible backup software that supports LTO drives can be installed. The disk storage managed by a hardware RAID controller stores the backup sets in a first step of a Backup-to-Disk-to-Tape strategy (B2D2T) while the second step will follow with the internal backup to the built in LTO drive.

Server hardware makes it possible
Deployed with server components, the company relies on an embedded industrial motherboard with four LAN interfaces supporting 10GbE and 1GbE, and also on a 4-core Intel server CPU, factory-installed 32GB RAM DDR4 ECC and an internal M.2 SSD for the Windows Server 2019 IoT OS. The Ti-NAS QT platform is managed via remote desktop (RDP) and the hardware can be monitored via the separate IPMI 2.0 interface. Thanks to Windows Server 2019 IoT, user get access to the internal RAID secured disk-storage without using additional CALs. The integrated hardware RAID controller provides cache buffering and ensures the performance which is needed to operate a LTO tape drive with native data throughput of up to 300Mb/s.

B2D2T on one platform
The Ti-NAS QT as NAS and backup platform is a hardware solution for executing a B2D2T backup strategy. The RAID-managed 5-bay NAS system based on Windows Server 2019 IoT provides up to 90TB of capacity, so there is usually enough disk space for backup sets. The following data transfer to a single LTO drive will be proceeded internally under using LTO data cartridge with up to 12TB native capacity per medium.

Open platform – Support for all major backup software vendors
The installed OS is ‘Windows Server 2019 IoT for Storage, which is the successor of the Windows Storage Server. This version of the Windows Server 2019 family, which is only available to Microsoft Corp.‘ OEMs, is factory-installed and licensed by the company. The Ti-NAS QT in general is designed as an open platform. This means the user decides for his preferred backup software and runs this on the system according to his preferences. The selected backup application should be compatible to Windows Server 2019 as well as supporting LTO drives.

Ti-NAS QT – Best to install in separate fire section
The company’s suggests the installation of its Ti-NAS QT platform in a separate fire section, far away from the central IT. Data transfer between the production servers, the central storage system and this NAS is realized via two optical 10GbE connections. The proposed B2D2T backup strategy will be managed by the chosen backup software which transfers the data first to the 5-bay NAS system and secondarily to the LTO media. After finishing the B2D2T process daily removal of the LTO data cartridge and its storage into an external place (i.e. bank safe) completes the backup strategy.

The Ti-NAS QT platforms are available preconfigured with up to 5x18TB enterprise HDDs and integrated LTO drive according to LTO-6, LTO-7 or LTO-8. All solutions are carrying a 36-month limited warranty period including an Advance Replacement Service of defective parts (FES). Optionally, the extension up to 60 months is possible. Requests for Ti-NAS QT platforms can be issued on to the company’s technical consulting staff.

Equipped with an LTO-6 drive and 20TB of  HDD capacity, it starts at a suggested retail price of €7,946, net. When it is equipped with 90TB HDD storage as well as an LTO-8 streamer, the suggested retail price is €12,007 net.
