Kioxia Adds Thin Provisioning to KumoScale Software Suite Based on NVMe-oF
Maximizes flash utilization for disaggregated cloud storage while reducing costs.
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on June 5, 2020 at 2:21 pmKioxia America, Inc. (formerly Toshiba Memory America, Inc.), the US-based subsidiary of Kioxia Corporation, has added thin provisioning to its KumoScale storage software based on NVMe-oF technology.

Thin provisioning joins KumoScale software’s growing list of advanced storage functions that allow for the virtualization and management of high-performance flash at data center scale.
Traditional storage systems allocate capacity beyond a user’s current needs in anticipation of future growth. This practice of ‘thick provisioning’ often reserves large amounts of flash capacity that may never be used. Through KumoScale software’s thin provisioning feature, capacity can be allocated to servers on a just-enough and just-in-time basis, eliminating wasted capacity. Thin vs. thick provisioning is one of many per-user optimizations available via KumoScale software’s Advanced Storage Class spec.
“We are proud to add another advanced data service to the KumoScale software suite – further enhancing the benefits that set it apart: speed, scale, and low cost,” noted Joel Dedrick, VP and GM, networked storage software. “Every application has different storage requirements, and KumoScale software is designed to handle them dynamically. We will continue to expand available options in order to help more users reap the benefits of a disaggregated architecture based on an NVMe-oF shared storage model.“
