Preliminary 3CQ19 Results: HDDs Rise to Over 83 Million Units, 240EB
As both Seagate and Western Digital post 14-week quarters
· 3.5″ desktop/CE HDDs: Total 3.5″ desktop/CE HDD shipments (including 3.5″ external HDDs) lifted approximately 1 million units Q/Q to nearly 26.5 million HDDs.
· 2.5″ mobile/CE HDDs: Total 2.5″ mobile/CE HDD shipments increased approximately 1.3 million units from the prior quarter to just over 38 million HDDs, driven in part by seasonally stronger 2.5″ external HDD shipments.
· 3.5″/2.5″ enterprise HDDs: Seagate and Toshiba now ship essentially all performance enterprise HDDs with Western Digital’s exit from this segment – sequential unit shipments rose approximately 5% to just over 4.2 million units. Continued strong hyperscale demand drove an 18% Q/Q increase in nearline shipments to roughly 14.7 million units, with a surging mix of high-capacity models boosting nearline capacity shipments to an estimated 135EB, a nearly 30% Q/Q jump.
