SSD Pricing Hits Bottom in 2Q19 – Trendfocus

Sequential shipments up 19%, exabytes increasing 27%

As Pricing Hits Bottom, SSD Unit and Exabyte Shipments Grow Across All Segments
Sequential SSD unit shipments up 18.8%, exabytes climb 26.7%

• Total SSDs shipped reached 64.38 million units fueled by growth in client with 56.85 million units shipped – OEM and channel categories both increased.
• Hyperscale demand drove a sharp increase in PCIe, with units reaching 3.11 million units and 5.47EB, an increase of 48% in both metrics.
• SAS SSDs rebounded somewhat after declining during the prior quarter, shipping over 934,000 units, and 2.65EB, translating to double-digit growth in exabytes for the quarter.
• Surprisingly, enterprise SATA SSDs also saw a slight increase in the quarter with units reaching 3.49 million – up 3% Q/Q, with exabytes increasing 18.4% to 3.11.
• With mixed results from competing vendors, NAND shipments increased 16.6% Q/Q as pricing for NAND also hit rock bottom.
• 3D NAND percentage grew to 90.5%, realizing nearly 70EB in the quarter with SSDs consuming 42.3%, up from 39.4% in the previous quarter.
