Nearline Units and Exabytes Continue to Rise
· 3.5″ Desktop/CE HDDs: Total desktop/CE HDD shipments (including 3.5″ external HDDs) remained steady in CQ2 at around 24.8 million units shipped, reflecting stable desktop and CE demand.
· 2.5″ Mobile/CE HDDs: Seasonally weaker 2.5″ external HDD demand combined with slightly lower notebook PC HDD demand to cut total 2.5″ mobile/CE HDD shipments by roughly over a half-million units to around 36.6 million HDDs.
· 3.5″/2.5″ Enterprise HDDs: Western Digital’s continued exit from the performance enterprise market combined with secularly weaker enterprise server/storage demand to cut performance enterprise HDD shipments by roughly 0.4 million units Q/Q to around 4.1 million HDDs. A rebound in demand for nearline HDDs by both cloud and OEM customers lifted sequential nearline shipments by nearly 15% to around 12.6 million units shipped, with total capacity shipped topping 100EB.
