Google Cloud Next: HYCU Expands Backup-as-a-Service

To protect data in Google Cloud

HYCU, Inc. announced support for Google Cloud services, with Google Cloud SQL being the first service to be supported.

This follows the introduction of HYCU Backup as a Service for Google Cloud Platform, a fully managed backup as a service for customers running their mission critical applications, databases on VMs running on Google Cloud. Now, customers running Google Cloud SQL will have 1-click backup and recovery with HYCU.

“Since developing and launching the first purpose-built backup as a service solution for Google Cloud users, the reception by Google Cloud partners and customers alike has been beyond what we anticipated. For Google Cloud users, we are now focused on delivering the value they would expect from a cloud native, enterprise class, tightly integrated data protection experience,” said Simon Taylor, CEO, HYCU. “With our support for Google Cloud as a managed service, users have the choice they need for the same consumer like experience with enterprise class functionality they have come to expect.”

Like Google Cloud Platform, HYCU Backup as a Service is a cloud native, elastic service that grows and shrinks with customers’ needs. Similar to Google Cloud services, customers can subscribe for HYCU in minutes from the Google Cloud Platform (GCP) Marketplace, login using their native Google Cloud credentials and experience the simplicity of HYCU. With no-agents to install and with zero deployment, there is no overhead on operations.

Now with the addition of support for Google Cloud SQL, highlights of the benefits Google customers can experience are:

  • Automated discovery of all Cloud SQL instances and databases
  • One click data protection for Cloud SQL instances
  • Granular recovery of databases
  • Automation for one-click, development and test copy management

Since HYCU was built with the Google Cloud user in mind and with its UI, there is no additional training required. As long as you are familiar with Google Cloud, you have access to a fully managed data protection service for Google Compute and Cloud SQL.

“Google Cloud is known as an innovator and that innovation is what makes Google Cloud users push to deliver value as they deploy, purchase and manage leading solutions,” said George Crump, co-founder and lead analyst, Storage Switzerland. “As HYCU adds enhanced data protection support for key Google Cloud services like Cloud SQL, with ease of access directly on the GCP Marketplace, I anticipate customers appreciating having the ability to simplify and improve their data protection of this critical data set. The combination of Cloud SQL and HYCU provides meaningful differentiation for Google Cloud and is something that organizations deciding on cloud investments should consider.”

“There is little tolerance for unavailability of priority applications and data. The need for enterprise-class data protection as a cloud-native service has never been more important as mission-critical cloud services like Cloud SQL get deployed more widely. Organizations need to protect, manage and recover their data in the cloud,” said Christophe Bertrand, data protection senior analyst, ESG. “HYCU continues to deliver on its roadmap at a fast pace and adds the workloads, services and features that Google Cloud admins and users alike look for in a managed backup as a service solution. Much as HYCU did with Nutanix in delivering an innovative ‘natively-developed’ solution, they are doing for Google Cloud.”

HYCU support for Google Cloud SQL will be available in 2Q19 with subsequent Google Cloud services support to follow. HYCU Backup as a Service is available on the GCP Marketplace and through authorized Google Cloud Service Provider partners.

Subscription and billing are handled through the GCP Marketplace. Pricing is determined by the amount data being protected and frequency of backup.

Comments

Considered as as scandal or not, cloud providers such Google or SaaS vendors like Salesforce don't offer data protection but only makes sure production data are highly available but this is not data protection as we know and expect. The only thing they protect finally is the infrastructure so the service can be maintained. Wow!

HYCU continues to iterate its expertise outside of Nutanix perimeter recognizing that cloud eats the world at a rapid pace and can't be ignored. Limitations of service by cloud providers mentioned above offer a business opportunity for data protection players and HYCU understood this rapidly. It also helps cloud providers increase their ecosystem.

HYCU for GCP was first introduced in July 2018 protecting VMs by leveraging Google snapshots, IAM and object storage. At this time, it was and is still the first backup and recovery solution offered as-a-service on GCP.

Now the company makes a new step with the full support of Google Cloud SQL with MySQL and PostgreSQL. GA will be June 2019.

The company goal is to be invisible for applications with very limited impact on production offloading the service to HYCU instances and simple for users.

The pricing model is still the same, charged by source capacity, billed by Google, and the service of course is listed on the marketplace.
