This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on April 12, 2019 at 2:14 pmDigital preservation provider, Preservica Ltd. announced the next generation, v6.0, of its active digital preservation and discovery platform.
Shaped by the user community in collaboration with the firm’s innovation, product and engineering teams, Preservica v6.0 delivers capabilities enabling archivists and information managers to further streamline the upload, appraisal, active preservation, management and secure discovery of digital content in an integrated and supported standards-based (OAIS ISO 14721) application.
Architected for future of digital preservation
With the volume, diversity and complexity of digital data and content continuing to grow, the v6.0 platform has been engineered to meet the challenges of managing and preserving digital content into the future. The scalable and extensible design includes more granular control over content and metadata, support for greater automation and connectivity, and enhanced APIs for leveraging AI and ML services for high-volume content classification, analytics and transcription.
Capabilities
Like previous versions, the v6.0 combines all the core functions needed to safeguard and future-proof digital content over decades, creating a living, active and usable digital archive for compliance, legal, brand and heritage needs.
Preservica v6.0 capabilities by core function:
Active Digital Preservation
v6.0 includes numerous updated pathways including video handling and preservation migrations. The re-engineered platform is aligned with PREMIS (Preservation Metadata: Implementation Strategies) enabling greater focus on individual assets and files. The company active digital preservation framework has also been enhanced based on the work of the PAR (Preservation Action Registry) community, laying the foundations for automated digital preservation.
Easy and automated content acquisition
Building on the range of content acquisition options already available, including automated website archiving, v6.0 adds:
-
Easy drag and drop file upload: Safeguard valuable data and digital assets using an easy drag-and-drop, browser-based interface to quickly upload files and metadata (up to 5Gb) into the new online preparation area.
-
Simple upload for larger files: Safeguard valuable data and digital assets using industry standard tools (such as S3 Transfer or CloudBerry) to upload larger files or collections of files and metadata to the new online holding area where they can be used during pre-ingest preparation.
-
Online pre-ingest preparation area: Appraise, prepare and arrange uploaded files and metadata in the new online preparation area before ingesting for active digital preservation in Preservica. The browser-based interface allows multiple projects to be worked and saved for revisiting later.
-
Automated SharePoint archiving and digital preservation: Get control of critical long-term content across the enterprise using the new intelligent SharePoint connector to automate the identification and transfer of ready-to-archive content for long-term digital preservation in Preservica.
This solution uses an API abstraction layer allowing connectors for other content platforms to be added over time e.g. OpenText, Dropbox, Google Drive, FileNet and other.
Flexible post-ingest content and metadata management
Building on the flexibility to rearrange collections, enrich metadata post-ingest and synchronize with catalogs like CALM, ArchivesSpace and Adlib, v6.0 adds further ease-of-use and capabilities:
-
Intuitive user experience: Streamlined ingest workflow and familiar file and folder view with fine-grained security and actions down to an individual asset level. Greater flexibility over how content is structured and presented.
-
OCR: For digitization projects Preservica’s OCR feature converts images of printed text into fully searchable data. OCR can be carried out during ingest, re-indexing or applied to specific parts of the collection.
Integrated secure access and discovery
Building on SOLR search and secure internal and public access with AV streaming, Preservica v6.0 now includes additional options:
-
User access and discovery : Out-of-the-box themes for easier customization and greater choice. New accessibility improvements and better online discoverability with SEO (Search Engine Optimization) enhancements. New services for customization and development of bespoke discovery layers.
Storage and deployment choice
Already available hosted on AWS and including a 100% data integrity guarantee and a choice of low-cost storage options at AWS prices, v6.0 is also available hosted on Azure:
-
Enterprise Private Cloud on Azure: It enables Microsoft enterprise and government customers to protect and future-proof critical long-term data over decades. It is designed for organizations with regulatory, privacy and security requirements and is managed by Preservica via two deployment models: in a private Azure network with dedicated resources in any region or on a customer’s own Azure infrastructure.
