HD DVD-R (2007-2008)
HD DVD (short for High-Definition/Density DVD) was a high-density optical disc format for video or data.
Supported principally by Toshiba, it was was envisioned to be the successor to the standard DVD format.
The recordable variant, HD DVD-R, was available available with a single-layer capacity of 15GB or a dual-layer capacity of 30GB.
In the middle of 2007, the first HD DVD recorders were released in Japan.
The HD DVD promotion group was disbanded in 2008 after a format war with Blu-Ray.
