There are more than 2,300 companies in the world offering online backup in the cloud according to our database. But many of them do not use their own architecture and prefer to buy a complete software package from providers like Acronis or BackupAgent, the service being hosted by the buyer, the vendor or others (BackupAgent enables backup to Azure).
BackupAgent was founded in 2005 in Delft, The Netherlands, by chief commercial officer Roland Sars and CTO and former CEO Robbert van Geldrop and got $2 million in investment last year from Runa Capital and previous investor Solid Ventures after undisclosed first round in 2007. Moos Bulder was named CEO in 2007.
BackupAgent adopted an indirect business model from the very start aimed at telcos, hosting providers and cloud distributors.
Acronis and BackupAgent plan to merge BackupAgent Cloud Backup and Acronis Backup as a Service into one cloud backup technology platform going forward.
BackupAgent will merge into Acronis and the BackupAgent name will carry the Acronis brand in the near future.
Probably the most interesting feature for Acronis is BackupAgent APS 2.0 package for Parallels. The Dutch firm has also an integration module with Autotask's IT Business Management Solution, an Hyper-V backup and recovery plug-in and also a module for users of HostBill to automate the billing of their cloud backup service.
Acronis, with goal to reach billion-dollar revenue, is much bigger than BackupAgent, having respectively 4.5 million and 50,000 customers.
