Atempo Acquired by ASG Software Solutions

To add backup and archiving to its wide enterprise software portfolio

ASG Software Solutions, in enterprise IT software solutions, has acquired Atempo, Inc.

The integration of Atempo’s backup and archiving solutions expands ASG’s ability to automate and simplify the management of complex IT environments to reduce risk and improve service delivery throughout the IT lifecycle.

"Our customers are dealing with exponential data growth and increasing complexity in meeting e-discovery and compliance regulations," said Arthur Allen, president and chief executive officer at ASG. "By integrating Atempo’s technologies into ASG’s solutions, we are able to provide customers with a scalable, long-term data protection solution that works across any infrastructure and on any platform. Atempo’s flexibility is a perfect match for enhancing several of our areas of expertise, including our cloud orchestration, information management and infrastructure management solutions."

Atempo has 13 offices worldwide and over 4,500 customers across data-intensive industries including manufacturing, media & entertainment, healthcare, telecommunications, government, higher education and others. Atempo’s archiving technology is focused on the long term preservation of digital assets, storage resource optimization and capacity planning, metadata management and ensuring e-discovery accessibility and meeting compliance requirements. Their data protection software is a high performance, scalable solution for heterogeneous environments with a data restore function. They offer complete enterprise server data protection, including virtual machines, as well as protection for databases, laptops and desktop computers to ensure all organization data is secured and preserved.

"Our backup and archiving solutions add depth and efficiency to ASG’s portfolio," said Atempo CEO Michael Wall. "ASG provides Atempo a platform for growth and expansion into the cloud market and a wider global reach. Atempo’s current customers and partners can benefit from ASG’s broader cloud solutions, as well as their expertise in other key areas, such as content management, data/metadata management, and infrastructure and operations management."

Comments

Speedy tempo for Atempo's Mike Wall. He was elected CEO of the company just two months ago. In this short period of time, he already found a buyer, ASG.

Financial terms were not disclosed as both firms are privately held.

A spokesman of Atempo told us: "It's wonderful news". But no more.

Founded in 1986, Allen Systems Group, Inc., headquartered in Naples, FL, with roughly 1,000 employees, 70 offices worldwide and 3,000 customers, is totally unknown in the storage industry, but not in IT offering numerous professional services and software solutions for metadata , applications, operations, content, performance, security and infrastructure management.

We just noted that, in 2008, ASG and HDS collaborate to provide archiving solutions for data preservation, governance, regulatory compliance, and recovery and that, in 2004, the firm entered in SRM through distribution partnership with TeraCloud. Storage will be a an activity that could nicely complement its current activities.

ASG expands mainly by acquisitions completing more than thirty ones (see below).

Atempo, born in France 19 years ago - under the name of Quadratec - desperately remained a small firm after spending as much as $38.2 million in financial funding. Headquartered in Palo Alto, CA with R&D in France, it has 13 offices worldwide and around 4,500 customers through 200 resellers and partners.

Apparently storage giants were not interested in Atempo with a good offering, Time Navigator, and more recently trying to push into the digital archiving market. But the firm has nothing revolutionary able to attract them, like for example competitor CommVault. It's the same situation for other old French storage software company Arkeia.
