By Jean-Jacques Maleval, Fri, October 9th, 2009
In "eco-friendly" online backup
Company: Newline Software, Inc. (the web site is www.0xda.com, 0xDA being the hexadecimal representation for the computer ASCII codes for carriage return and linefeed, otherwise known as a newline)
Location: Redmond, WA
Founded in: June 2008
Financial funding: closed Series A Preferred Stock of an unknown amount, probably between $250,000 and $1 million
Executives: Two Microsoft veterans Kory Gill and Marius Nita, software developers working for Windows Logo Program to certify devices
Product: Newline Exact cloud-based backup & restore service, a software in beta release, is a solution for online backup of PC aimed to be 'eco-friendly'; the service is supposed to be different depending on the content of the data for a total cheaper price; the company speaks about 'eco-digital preservation:' "For example, migrating data and file formats from older to newer versions, creating a standard around transferring digital assets when an event occurs, like an estate transfer. Also included is assigning a lifetime to digital assets for files that expire, such as legal or business documents."
Market: Individual and business customers
Our opinion: For the moment we don't have enough information on Newline Exact from the start-up in stealth mode to have a clear opinion, but it will have to add much more than the existing offering of online backup companies as they are more than 1,600 currently in the world.
