Preliminary CQ1 ’17 Results: Client and CE Segments Impacted by Seasonality
HDD Shipments Ease to 98.5 – 100 Million
3.5″ Desktop/CE HDDs: Total desktop/CE HDD shipments (including 3.5″ external HDDs) shipments declined in seasonal manner due to softer desktop PC and 3.5″ external HDD sales in
CQ1 to approximately 33-35 million units.
2.5″ Mobile/CE HDDs: Notebook demand weakened in CQ1, and this along with steady SSD attach rates impacted 2.5″ mobile HDD volumes. Lower 2.5″ external HDD and CE demand made
matters worse, as total 2.5″ HDD sales slipped over 10% sequentially to around 50 million units.
3.5″/2.5″ Enterprise HDDs: For a second consecutive quarter, total enterprise HDD sales declined. Both performance enterprise and nearline HDD volumes were down for the quarter, as
total unit shipments fell to approximately 16-17 million.
